Application of a Recovery Paradigm as a Conceptual Framework for Approaching Addictive Behaviors
Kim Jae-Young

Abstract
This paper proposes the application of a recovery paradigm to addictive behaviors, including substance abuse and behavioral addictions. Limitations of the disease model are discussed, and through a review of the history and concept of recovery, which focuses on the client¡¯s subjective life experiences and inherent change processes, the importance of applying a recovery paradigm to addictive behavior is underscored. The application of the Motivational Balance Theory (MBT) is proposed as an example. MBT suggests that addictive behaviors are caused by imbalances among several basic motivations and needs. Existing research and national policies related to the application of a recovery model to addiction are also reviewed. Based on our findings, we propose that a recovery paradigm should be actively applied to addiction interventions.
